hot spring, park, tunnel tour, Alameda – Ongoing Letter

Got a late start! The hot spring pool opened at 7am, but I wasn’t there until about 8:30. I made some mediocre coffee in the hotel room and wandered down there to greet the day.

It wasn’t until about 9:15am that I found a Starbucks in the lounge area.

Being on the 4th floor of the building and open to the outdoors, the view is pretty nice … well, it’s the street … but nice anyway.

Come time to leave, I was in no hurry to be anywhere, so I had a look around Moose Jaw. Next to the hotel, which was also the view from my window, was Crescent Park. I wandered around there for a while.

I was hoping for a bit of quiet here, being a park, but none was to be found.

I plugged the parking meter with $1.75 and set out to find the Tunnels of Moose Jaw. I found it after navigating some badly needed street renovations. They said they had free parking around back. Great! Except it took me forever to find it due to a) street construction, b) a never-ending maze of back alleys and parking lots with ‘PRIVATE – NO TRESPASSING’ signs, and potholes the size of a toilet bowl. I bought my ticket and waited for an hour or so for my tour.

Of course, they won’t let you take pictures in there. So I didn’t. But I was tempted! The tour, called Bunker 24, given by a talented and likely professional actor, showed a post-WWII Cold War era bunker from a new military recruit’s perspective. Really interesting! There were only three people including myself, the other two being senior women.

Of course, no trip to Saskatchewan would be complete without mentioning Tommy Douglas.

Later, I found a restaurant called Nit’s Thai Food.

As you can see, it was packed!

No, not really. I was one of two patrons. But the food was excellent. The booth seating is utter crap, but the place was clean, the food fresh and hot, and the service good. I looked at some reviews online, and some didn’t like it. Hmm. I did.
